Oxford Street Revision

Overview

A comprehensive revision of a property on Oxford Street, focused on modernizing the interior while preserving the home's original character. The project began with a full structural assessment, identifying areas where decades of wear had taken their toll. Walls were opened up to improve the flow between the living and dining areas, creating a bright, open-plan space that feels both contemporary and welcoming. The kitchen was completely stripped back and rebuilt from scratch. Custom cabinetry was designed to make the most of the available space, with stone benchtops, undermount sink, and integrated appliances giving it a clean, modern finish. New plumbing and electrical work was run throughout the entire ground floor as part of this phase. Upstairs, each of the three bedrooms received new flooring, fresh insulation, and updated joinery. The main bathroom was reconfigured to include a freestanding bath and a separate shower, finished with large-format tiles and brushed brass fixtures. External work included repainting the full exterior, replacing the spouting and downpipes, and laying new concrete paths around the perimeter. A new timber deck was added off the rear living area, extending the usable outdoor space significantly. Throughout the project, care was taken to retain the character features that made the home unique — the original kauri floors were sanded and refinished, the leadlight windows were repaired rather than replaced, and the period-appropriate cornicing was restored rather than covered over. The result is a home that feels completely transformed from the inside out, while still sitting comfortably within its streetscape and honouring the craftsmanship of its original construction.
